English IV Assignment // A Better Way to Reduce Crime

"Do you believe that longer prison sentences, is a better way to reduce crime? or any other way?"

If we talk about crime, there are a lot of interesting topics about it. For example, about pros and cons in any kind of sentencing. For me, the longer prison sentencing would not make the suspect surrender. Because, there will always 1001 ways for them to do the same crime after they free from prison. For example, in robbery case. The main factor that make a person commits a robbery is because of their economic situation. If their economic situation is not stable enough to support their life, they would find the way to keep surviving by doing robbery to earn money from the goods they have stole.

So, what's the suitable punishment to make the suspect surrender? And also to reduce crime? Since Indonesia apply the Law of Human Rights or we usually called it as HAM (Hak Asasi Manusia), so to reduce crime by doing death penalty is still not right. Because Indonesia, especially HAM, put a huge concern in human rights/human life, and of course it will create pros and cons if we apply the death penalty. But I think the other way to reduce crime that suitable for Indonesian culture, for example in robbery case, we could cut off one of the suspect's hand/feet.

"Does that give impact to the human rights?" 

I think NO. Why? Because we don't take all of their life. We just want to make they feel surrender for what they have done before and don't want to do it again. They still could continue their life in the next day if they have strong desire to survive in their life with the positive way. And this method is also could make other people afraid to do the same crime.
